The settlement appears to have managed a ford throughout the larger sized channel. The later Roman identify was a latinate method of the Brittonic term for "ramparts" (cf. Gaelic rath plus the nearby villages of Ratby and Ratcliffe[twenty]), suggesting the location was an oppidum. The plural form of the identify indicates it had been to begin with
